"Oh, Man"                                 Stuart Riordan

An homage to Man Ray, surrealist photographer. The "f" holes superimposed on the image reference "Violon d'Ingres", a photo of Man Ray's mistress/model Kiki with the same "f" holes.

 It is a word play on "violon" which also means "hobby" in French . Man Ray was commenting visually on the Ingres nudes. 

Stuart Riordan was painting in a beach cabana at Seaside in 1990. She was exhibiting in the 1^st and only Seaside Invitational Group Art Show in October and had landed the cabana to work after the show closed.  The picturesque little structure stood on the beach by Sundog Books’ old location. She painted there through that fall and tried to explain to strolling onlookers what her work was about. Nostalgia is part of her return to Seaside, but the best part is her stunning and disturbing artwork.

Riordan’s work is painstakingly slow and deliberate. Layer after layer of detail and texture create the deep, rich surface for which she is known.  She would not deny the term “fetish finish” applies to her love of the process. The result is monumental expressions of the issues of her life and times.
