A self-taught painter inspired by the strong folk art
traditions of his childhood in
Nova Scotia
, Innes’ work has been exhibited in the
U.S.
,
Canada
and
France
.
His first illustrated book for children, (ages 3-5) Flight
of the Whirlgigs, was a bestseller for HarperCollins Children’s
Books in
Canada
. Reviews compare the work with the classic Barbar
the Elephant and the celebrated Madeline
series.
Innes will devote his residency to conceiving and
developing an illustrated children’s book set against the
Gulf
Coast
and inspired by the area’s culture and traditions.
He has previously visited the area and has produced several
paintings in response to his introduction to the
Emerald
Coast
area. They will be on exhibit
at Eileen West Gallery throughout the month. Innes will also conduct a
storytelling through art workshop with SNS art and language students in
conjunction with their mentoring activities at Bay
Elementary School.
